When you work from home, how do you keep your kids occupied?

Juggling children and jobs can be difficult if you work outside the home or work from home, but work from home moms face additional challenges. After all, in a typical workplace, you won't have to worry about a coworker barging in and screaming, "Mommy, he took my doll!" just as you're about to start an important conference call.

So, how does a work-at-home mom keep her kids occupied and comfortable as she tries to finish her work?

First and foremost, you must inform your children of times when they are not to be bothered. Set aside time for play and work, and tell them that if they don't bother you while you're working, you'll be able to give them your undivided attention during playtime. Using a do not disturb sign on your office door as a reminder when you simply cannot be disturbed.

Of course, if your children have plenty to do as you work, they are more likely to behave. Put games and toys in a box that can only be used when mom is at work. To keep your children entertained, add a new puzzle, coloring book, or small toy on a regular basis.

When you don't work on the phone, it's a little easier to keep your kids entertained while you're at work. Create a private office for them, complete with a small table and chairs. Each morning, pack a lunch box with some of their favorite snacks and a few juice boxes so you aren't bombarded with demands for food and beverages. A children's magazine, easy puzzles, coloring books, and art supplies should all be included. The number of interruptions should drop dramatically until your children are able to work alongside you.

A mothers helper can be a perfect option for moms who need peace and quiet but have small children. You won't need a professionally qualified babysitter to assist you since you'll be at home. Instead, look for a teen who has no prior babysitting experience but enjoys working with children. For a few nice after-school treats and a few bucks, she'll probably be able to watch your kids while you work.

Finally, keeping your children calm and entertained while you work is not always possible. You will just need to decide to take the day off if your child is sick. After all, the reason you work from home is so that you can be there for your kids whenever they need you!
